Background of the Study

Tourism is increasingly being recognized as a key diversification strategy in developing economies, especially in regions that rely heavily on a single industry, such as agriculture or oil (Ogunleye & Ismail, 2023). In Nigeria, Bauchi State, located in the northeastern part of the country, is known for its natural attractions, cultural heritage, and historical sites, but it has largely relied on agriculture and government support for economic growth. In recent years, however, there has been a growing interest in leveraging tourism as a means of economic diversification to reduce dependency on traditional industries (Akinmoladun & Adebayo, 2024).

Bauchi State offers several tourism opportunities, including wildlife reserves, cultural festivals, and historical landmarks, yet it faces challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, limited tourism promotion, and insufficient government investment in the sector. Tourism could play a vital role in diversifying the state's economy, creating new job opportunities, and fostering sustainable growth. This study will investigate the potential of tourism as a diversification strategy in Bauchi State, evaluating the state’s tourism assets, current challenges, and opportunities for growth.

Statement of the Problem

While Bauchi State has the potential to develop its tourism sector, it has not yet fully capitalized on this opportunity to diversify its economy. There is limited research on how tourism can effectively contribute to economic diversification in the state. This study aims to investigate how tourism can be integrated into Bauchi’s economic diversification strategy, identify challenges, and propose solutions for enhancing the sector’s role in the economy.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the potential of tourism as a diversification strategy for Bauchi State.

2. To identify the challenges that hinder the growth of tourism in Bauchi State.

3. To recommend strategies for promoting tourism as an economic diversification tool in Bauchi State.

Research Questions

1. How can tourism contribute to the economic diversification of Bauchi State?

2. What are the key challenges to developing tourism as a diversification strategy in Bauchi State?

3. What strategies can be implemented to promote tourism as a key economic sector in Bauchi State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Tourism can significantly contribute to the economic diversification of Bauchi State by creating new employment opportunities and generating revenue.

2. Bauchi State faces significant challenges, such as inadequate infrastructure and limited marketing, in developing tourism as an economic diversification strategy.

3. Implementing targeted policies and improving infrastructure can enhance the role of tourism in Bauchi’s economic diversification.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on tourism’s potential as an economic diversification strategy in Bauchi State, exploring challenges and opportunities in the sector. Limitations include the difficulty of obtaining comprehensive data on tourism revenue and the challenge of assessing long-term impacts within a short study period.
